The earliest tools, as one might expect, were of high utilitarian value and were quite easy to form, requiring a minimal number of simple blows by the hammer stone. An example of one of the earlier fashioned tools, featured here, is the digger. Notice that the lower edge of the digger as shown has been honed to a thin edge. This sharpening of the digging tool, using a wider target material, led to the manufacture of the axe.
